Melbourne Magnifique – A Spotlight on Art Exhibitions in Melbourne

As a city known for its art and culture, it will likely come as no surprise to find that there is a lot to get excited about in Melbourne’s artistic landscape. Large and small, there are a wide array of exhibitions and popups to entice the interest of art-lovers of all kinds. This can make it quite difficult to decide what to see, especially if you’re only in Australia’s culture capital for a short time.

For those that are looking for a fantastic way to experience all of Melbourne’s cultural offerings, RNR Melbourne offers a stylish, centrally located range of short stay serviced apartments to choose from. However, for now, let’s dip our toes into what you have to look forward to.

Hyphenated

In the face of a variety of hardships and cultural restrictions over the years, Asian communities have had a significant impact on Australian history. Despite this, these contributions often appear to go unobserved in popular culture, especially through a contemporary lens.

HYPHENATED, an event curated by PHUONG NGO and TAMMY WONG HULBERT, looks to change this. Bringing together an eclectic group of contemporary artists, HYPHENATED presents a collection of works of Asian-Australians living in Victoria; painting a tapestry of viewpoints regarding issues ranging from the personal to the worldwide.

Open until the 21st of April 2018, this exhibition is a perfect chance to view Australia from a perspective that often goes unobserved in regard to this country’s global identity.

Accession: Darebin Art Collection

Presenting several new acquisitions to the Darebin Art Collection, Accession looks to represent an accurate cross-section of Australia’s contemporary art world. This collection includes a wide array of newly-commissioned pieces that will be making their debut to the community at large, providing one more reason not to miss this stunning array of Australian works.

Running until the 13th of May 2018, interested patrons still have many chances to experience this unique event for themselves. Plus, with free admission, there’s no reason not to treat yourself with a dash of Australian artistic culture.

Colony: Australia 1770-1861

In the grand scheme of things, Australia’s colonial history is exceedingly brief, with a large number of changes and developments happening in a limited timespan. This is one of the many reasons that Australian art and history from the 18th-19th century has fascinated so many, and with NGV Australia’s new exhibit, those interested have quite a bit to be excited about.

The Colony: Australia 1770-1861 exhibition brings together an impressive collection of artistic works from this fascinating, complicated period in Australian history; from indigenous cultural objects to early watercolours and illustrations creating a snapshot of early colonialism.

Running until July, this unique exhibition drawing from all sides of Australia’s colonial past is not to be missed.
