Research in Relaxation: Melbourne’s Top Study Spots

Finding time to study is a difficult undertaking, but even more challenging is finding an adequate spot for that study to take place. Studying at home is an option, however, the distractions are numerous, and can affect productivity. Similarly, studying at a learning institute may not be as effective as you’d like. Not only are there many students, but friends may unintentionally distract you from your assignments. Furthermore, doing assignments at school or home can stump your creativity, as the scenery around you doesn’t challenge the mind to think differently. Changing up your study space can do wonders for your learning, and is a great way to jumpstart your brain. Here are four places around Melbourne that make excellent study spots. Enjoy!

The Library.

Surrounding yourself with a world of literature can inspire you to tackle your projects head-on. Libraries are quiet, communal areas that come at no cost to you. Bring along your laptop or tablet, or reserve one of the library computers. If you’re in the city, the State Library is a great spot to try out. Not only does it provide a study space, but is close to cafes that will satisfy your caffeine fix. If you don’t find yourself in the city, find your local library; there’s bound to be one near you.

Nature.

Studying outside is another option that should be considered. The stale air found inside can often affect your productivity, so getting a breath of fresh air can do wonders for your study session. Not only will the fresh oxygen renew your mind, but the change of scenery can prompt a creative approach to your studying. This option may not be the best in the middle of winter, but in the coming semesters it is definitely one to consider! Try the Royal Botanic Gardens or the lawn of the Royal Exhibition Building. If you’re far from the city, a local park will also do the trick!

Caffeine.

It is well known that caffeine becomes like water to students in times of study, so choosing a spot in close proximity to this elixir may be a great idea. A benefit of studying in a cafe is the free wifi, as well as the constant availability of food and coffee. Unfortunately, these havens tend to be quite popular, leading to a loud and busy environment. If you’re able to study with headphones, this may not be a problem, but it is something to consider.

Other.

Libraries, nature and cafes are all great options to spruce up your study space, but they are not the only ones. Broadening your expectation of what a great study space should be will result in many more options coming to light. Studying in a museum is a great option for students. Like the library, you will be surrounded by rooms of information, however, this knowledge may be explored without having to sit at a desk. Similarly, studying in an art gallery such as the National Gallery of Victoria is also an option.  While some exhibits cost money at this gallery, there are many free ones running at all times. Consider these options with as much weight as the rest. They may be unusual spots to study at, but are definitely worth trying.
