The New Year’s News – What’s on in Melbourne this January

As every Melbournian will tell you, their city is a hive of fun and activity all year round but never more so than in January. The weather is sizzling and the place is jumping with things to do and see! From food to festivals and sports to streetlife, this city has it all. So get the diary out and start planning your next trip to the art and culture capital of Australia – Melbourne!

Australian Tennis Open

Every January the international sports world turns its attention to Melbourne as we host the Australian Tennis Open at Rod Laver Arena. The event attracts the world’s top seeded players all vying for two of the most prestigious trophies in sport – the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup for the Men and the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup for the Women.

The field for 2019 will be headed by such tennis luminaries as Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep. While the Open is the main course, Tennis Australia also run a range of other wonderful events to participate in, including:

  • Qualifying tournament – 8 to 11 January (free entry)
  • Tie Break Tens – 9 Jan (ticketed event)
  • Practice matches played on Margaret Court Arena (free entry)
  • Australian Open Draw Ceremony – 10 Jan from 6pm. Margaret Court Arena (free ticketed event)
  • Kids Tennis Day – 12 Jan (ticketed event)
  • Beyond Blue Concert – 13 Jan (tickets via Ticketek)
  • ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Day – 17 Jan Buy Tickets

The Open runs from 14th January through to 27th January and tickets can be purchased via ticketek.

Sugar Mountain Festival

Mark 20 January 2019 down in the diary for the spectacular Sugar Mountain Festival, being held in Melbourne’s Art Precinct. Sugar Mountain is run annually as a single day event. It  was conceived to celebrate creativity in its many forms by showcasing contemporary music as well as visual art, new media and performance, bridging different mediums.

With an array of local and international talent performing concurrently from various venues across town, this promises to be a standout attraction. Tickets can be purchased online via sugarmountainfestival.com.

Midsumma Festival

As the name suggests, Midsumma celebrates Melbourne’s diversity whilst revelling in the atmosphere of our long, hot summer days and nights. The festival offers a range of events including:

  • Midsumma Festival Bar – 21 Jan to 10 Feb
  • Midsumma and Australia Post Art Prize – 22 Jan to 3 Feb
  • Dancing Qweens – 22 Jan

  • Midsumma Extravaganza – 29 Jan
