Melbourne is a wonderful city to explore, but with so much hustle and bustle, it can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint what events are running. Although we are still in the depths of winter, there are many fun things to enjoy; there is no need to stay cooped up indoors. Aside from the obvious attractions that run all year round, there are some seasonal events that are worth the adventurous trip into the city centre. Here are five such events that we recommend exploring this August.
The National Gallery of Victoria has been granted the honour of hosting more than 200 works from New York’s Museum of Modern Art. This winter exhibition will be running until 7th October, and is definitely worth paying a visit. The gallery has separated the works into eight sections according to certain themes, and is showcasing works from artists such as Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh and Andy Warhol. Adding to this exhibition, is the reignition of the NGV’s Friday Nights series. Running until the 15th october, this series is the best way to enjoy the beautiful artworks alongside both local and international music acts. The tickets come with entry to the MoMA exhibition, as well as access to food and drinks. Doors open at 6pm, but its best to book early in order to secure a spot!
The Night Market hosted by the Queen Victoria Market is another great spot to visit this winter. Open from 5-10pm on wednesday nights, the market boasts 130 art, fashion and general merchandise stalls, as well as 60 food stalls! With a great lineup of music and entertainment performances, this market is not one to miss! If you’ve visited this market in previous years, there is still more to see. Fresh in 2018 is the Book Nook: a rotating supply of new and used books along with vinyl records. Also new in 2018 is the Mystery Degustation: a six-course mystery meal catered with international cuisines and matching Mitchelton wines. Book now to reserve your spot, and enjoy the adventure awaiting you.
The Round She Goes market will also be visiting Melbourne this winter. Boasting 60 stalls of preloved and vintage clothing, the market will be hosted at the Coburg Town Hall on 12th August from 10-3pm. With only a $2 entry fee, this market is worth a visit this winter.
This wine bar is making it possible to buy sensational wines at cellar door prices this winter. Located above Cumulus Inc on Flinders Lane, Cumulus Up is hosting the City Cellar Door and Wine on the first Saturday of each month. With the gold coin entry fee donated directly to OzHarvest, this is not an event to be missed! Each month focuses on a different regional wine, with each tasting accompanied by pork rolls roasted by the kitchen staff. The wines themselves are the guests of honour, with older vineyards such as Yeringberg celebrating 150 years in the industry in 2018. Newer wines will also be showcased, such as Payten Jones and a new range from Mount Mary.
